FAMOUS 2: European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems 2

Description of the Project

Famous-2 continues the concept studies and roadmap begun in EDIDP Famous project, addressing the challenge of maximizing synergies, standardization and interoperability of next-generation European armoured vehicles, in order to answer the needs of the digital battlefield. These new uncertain and demanding scenarios require disruptive technologies to achieve decision-making superiority, ensure survivability and reduce life cycle costs. The project undertakes the study, design, testing and prototyping of the vehicles and their subsystems.

The proposal introduces indeed a next generation armored platforms and upgrade and modernization of existing platforms: design, prototyping and testing of future all-terrain vehicle (ATV, a tracked APC) and light armored vehicle (LAV), and upgrading Main Battle Tank (MBT) with 360° situational awareness system and active protection. The project will make new ground platforms more agile, modular and energy-efficient, thus answering to the needs and challenges posed by the changing operational environment for the armored platforms.

Indra will lead the C4I (Command, Control, Communication and Computing) and Interoperability subproject through the Mission System and Battlefield Management System, Internal and External Communications, Cyberdefence and Manned/Unmanned Operation, where the participanting companies in the subproject will be: Nexter, Diehl, Savox, LMT and Kongsberg. In addition, related to the vehicle architecture subproject, it will participate in the definition of System Requirements and Radar Sensors for Situational Awareness, as well as in the development and integration of the APS radar in the System Architecture, this latter for the Survivability subproject.

Technologies Employed

The FAMOUS-2 programme aims to develop future technologies and performances that enhance ground combat capabilities in the areas of mobility, hybrid operation, power generation and energy storage, such as well as security systems, situational awareness, robotics, C4I solutions, weapon systems and modern life cycle support solutions.

The main objective of the subproject led by Indra is to propose a concrete implementation of the architecture for the Mission System of the vehicle, based on current civil and military open architecture concepts and standards (for example, STANAG 4754 NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture). It will integrate communications, interoperability and cybersecurity aspects. The application of main disruptive technologies will be analyzed and included in the architecture. For example (but not limited to): 1) Artificial Intelligence to support decision making, mission planning and operation, threat detection and awareness, predictive maintenance and training and simulation, Natural Language Processing for command; 2) Big data and cloud for data storage, processing and communication; 3) IoT for logistic and system performance and status monitoring; 4) Augmented/Virtual reality to enhance awareness during operation and to aid in training and simulation; 5) Autonomous vehicles.
