Space as a new critical architecture in Europe
Indra Group’s presence at Mobile World Congress 2026 will mark a turning point in the way in which Spain and Europe conceive the communications architecture of the future, particularly in the defence and space domains. Within a global context in which security, technological resilience, and strategic autonomy have become decisive factors, the Group will attend the event in Barcelona to give an insight into how space communications will constitute a structural element of the critical connectivity that sustains key services, security operations, and industrial competitiveness. The network will no longer stay on the ground, it will continue in orbit, and space will be fully integrated as a fundamental layer of the telecommunications ecosystem to anticipate risks, protect key infrastructures, and bolster the decision-making capacity of governments, institutions, and companies.
This vision will become particularly relevant through the participation of companies such as Hispasat, which, under the umbrella of Indra Space, will crystallize a paradigm shift transporting Europe’s technological sovereignty beyond the earth’s surface. For the first time, the congress will incorporate an area devoted to the space sector, an express acknowledgment of satellites as a core part of the connectivity network required by Europe to guarantee critical services, manage emergencies, promote its digital economy, and strengthen its strategic autonomy. For example, the IRIS² project, led by Hispasat, exemplifies this qualitative leap, with a new European secure connectivity architecture conceived as a critical infrastructure, based on multi-orbit capabilities that are capable of guaranteeing continuity, resilience, and sovereignty, including in crisis settings.
Indra Space will also visit Barcelona to present the Startical initiative developed in partnership with ENAIRE, which is conveying the communications, navigation, and surveillance infrastructure to space by means of a constellation comprising over 200 satellites. Startical has already reached a historic milestone, namely the first ever real-time voice and data communications between an aircraft and a control center from an orbiting satellite, opening up the door to new global routes and safer and more sustainable air traffic control throughout the world. The company also plays a key role in Celeste, the new European program for positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services in low Earth orbit (LEO) driven by the European Space Agency (ESA). As a centerpiece, the company will also display its VORAX satellite platform, a key element constituting the technological basis for the satellites of this demonstration mission scheduled for 2027.
It provides a space/land vision that reduces dependence on non-European constellations and positions the continent in a new geopolitical equilibrium in which the security of governmental communications, the defence of digital sovereignty, and control over strategic assets are no longer aspirations but rather tangible capabilities. Indra Group at MWC 2026: a guided tour of the intelligence and talent set to connect the future
Over the four days during which Barcelona will become a global digitalization hub, Indra Group’s exhibition area will serve as a window to the immediate future of European technology with a Spanish hallmark. Visitors will not only learn how its technology can protect cities and countries through IndraMind, they will also be able to enjoy the VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aerial unit in the exhibition area, and the above-mentioned VORAX satellite platform for navigation.
The company will also underline its firm commitment to smart mobility, with projects such as T-Mobilitat, the multi-modal and interoperable platform that integrates over 70 subway, bus, streetcar and commuter train operators in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, and the recent contract worth close to €1 billion it has signed with Transport for London (TfL) to operate the ticketing system for the city’s entire public transport network.
Indra Group will also show how it can connect drone and unmanned aircraft traffic management with that of commercial aircraft in the same airspace, by means of systems that help make instant decisions during operations that cannot be allowed to fail. It will also provide real-world examples of artificial intelligence, ranging from the coordination of complex operations to data analysis in Formula 1, while showing how new chips and computer equipment can streamline these models to bolster defence and security.
Likewise, Minsait will show companies and organizations how its connected solutions are driving the transformation of the public administrations, healthcare, the energy sector, Industry 4.0, consumer goods, the financial world, and telecommunications.
