Indra deploys traffic management technology in Chile’s Lo Ruiz Tunnel

The company will deploy the integrated system that will enable the supervision and coordination of operations in the new strategic corridor, which will improve road connectivity in northern Chile and help reduce congestion at the Quilicura Junction and cut travel times by up to 20 minutes
It will implement the communications network, the Traffic Operations Center, the Data Processing Center, and the Intelligent Transportation Systems, which will be integrated into a centralized platform to ensure safer and more efficient operations

Indra, a global benchmark when it comes to technologies to improve mobility and public transport management, has been awarded the development and implementation of the Traffic Management System (TMS) of the Lo Ruiz Tunnel in Chile. The solution will allow for the monitoring, coordination and management of operations for this strategic infrastructure, which will improve the connectivity between Renca and Quilicura and help reduce congestion in the northern sector of Santiago.
Sociedad Concesionaria Autopista Central, part of VíasChile, awarded Indra the implementation of the Traffic Management System (TMS) to support future operations in the Lo Ruiz Tunnel. The project includes the development of the system’s engineering and software and the supply, implementation, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of the technological infrastructure to support the tunnel’s comprehensive operations, allowing real-time monitoring of the functioning of the different critical systems, optimizing traffic management, and reinforcing the safety of both users and the infrastructure.
The scope of the contract encompasses the implementation of the communications network, the Traffic Operations Center, the Data Processing Center and the Intelligent Transportation Systems, which include video surveillance cameras, messaging panels and variable signage, emergency telephony (SOS), a public address system, continuous vehicular flow measurements, clearance and barrier control, radio communications and user information systems.
All of these solutions will be integrated into a centralized management and control platform designed under criteria of interoperability, redundancy, cybersecurity and high availability, allowing permanent monitoring of the infrastructure, early detection and management of incidents, coordination of the operational response and easier real-time decision-making, thus contributing to safer, more efficient and reliable operations in the new road corridor.
These technologies will offer operators a comprehensive vision of the state of the infrastructure, improving the capacity to respond to events, optimizing operational continuity and strengthening the management of a project that’s set to benefit the thousands of people who travel between the two municipalities on a daily basis.

The solution will be capable of centralizing the supervision of the critical systems, detecting and managing incidents, and supporting a coordinated operational response, providing Autopista Central with an integrated view to ensure operations in the tunnel with high standards of safety and efficiency”.
The Lo Ruiz Tunnel is one of the strategic projects to improve road connectivity in the northern sector of Santiago. The project will cover around three kilometers, with two tunnels under Cerro Lo Ruiz directly connecting the General Velásquez axis of Autopista Central and the Autopista Américo Vespucio Norte, helping reduce congestion at the Quilicura Junction, one of the busiest intersections in the capital. The incorporation of smart technologies will enable this new infrastructure to operate under high standards of safety, availability, and efficiency as soon as it goes into service.
